What is an EPS File?

Have you been asked by a printer, signwriter or designer for your logo as a 'EPS' Vector File?,
I bet you are probably wondering what this is?

Technically, EPS stands for 'Encapsulated Post Script'... confused?

EPS files are usually be generated by all drawing applications as used by Graphic Designers in applications like Adobe Illustrator. If your logo was designed by a graphic designer, they should have originally supplied you with an '.eps' file.

This file is a must for every business as Designers, Signwriters and Printers need these files so that when the logo is printed, it will remain sharp crisp and clean.

Why do I need an EPS (Vector) version of my logo?

If you try and enlarge a Jpeg version of your logo (see example below), you will note that it pixelates and looses resolution as the logo is made from tiny little squares.

If you have a EPS Vector file of your logo, it will never loose resolution no matter how large or small you go.

Basically the EPS Vector File is a bunch of lines which make up your logo - not pixels/squares like a JPEG. (see example below)

Will you need JPEG versions of your logo then?

Yes, JPEG, GIF Files etc are all need. You will often need these logos for internal company use, for example: WORD Letterheads, to Insert into emails and all other computer applications.

When will I need the EPS File then?

You will need the EPS File to give to Signwriters when making signs, Printers when creating stationery etc. So in a nutshell, supply your EPS file when the logo will be enlarged or printed.

So what files should I ask for when I get my logo designed?

When you have your logo designed, be sure to ask for:
1. EPS Vector Version of your logo - in CYMK Colour, PMS Colour and Black and White
2. JPEG and GIF File Versions of your logo - in RGB Colour, and Black and White.
You will need these for use in Microsoft Word, Emails and for the Internet.
